Hey! I'm Kirsten and I just completed my sophomore year at Rocky
Mountain High School in Fort Collins, CO. I keep myself busy through
maintaining a balance between sports, school, and extracurriculars. I
serve as the Treasurer to my school’s Key Club, I’m actively involved in
DECA and FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America), German Club and I
was selected to be in Girls Rising, a club that educates other students
on the significance of educating women and ending modern day slavery.
Additionally, I play varsity tennis and I love to be in the outdoors,
whether it’s hiking, backpacking or skiing-count me in! A personal goal
since I was a kid is to travel the world and explore other cultures.Fortunately, I am gonna be doing a lot of this this summer. I was one of 18 kids selected from across the US to take part in American Youth Leadership Program (AYLP) to Singapore and Malaysia. This program requires us to take part in pre-trip projects every two weeks, then go on the trip and implement a post program project when we come back. I am very honored to be chosen for this program and be a US Ambassador! On this blog, I'll be posting updates, pics and talk about my trip! Today, I am getting ready to leave for L.A. where I'll meet the other participants and prepare for our trip to Singapore and Malaysia. We'll be staying at Loyola Marymount University during our time in L.A.
-Things I'm looking forward to on this trip:
-meeting like-minded peers
-gain a better understanding of sustainable
development
-become socially responsible global citizens
-learn how to be an active leader in my school and community
These are two questions I'm going to exlpore throughout my trip:
1.
Singapore’s rapid growth and development has been a model that
surrounding countries aspire to. However, does this rapid growth take
these countries cultural identities away and replace them with a more
Western appearance? Is it possible to preserve a country’s cultural
identity while undergoing rapid development and urbanization?
2. Singapore has been dedicated to make its city sustainable and
self-reliant. As they have limited resources and lack of land to expand,
how did they achieve that goal of being self-reliant and making the
most of their scarce resources? What can the United States learn from
Singapore’s success and apply it towards making the US more sustainable?
I'm about to drive down to DIA in about 5 min. but I just wanted to say that I'm gonna miss all my friends and family when I'm gone. Please feel free to Skype me or message me on Facebook!
